Artist Profile Aana Yogini

Aana Yogini (Aana Sharma) is the first Swiss woman trained in India as a Dhrupad vocalist within the traditional Guru–Shishya Parampara lineage (2004–2010). She studied intensively with Uday Bhawalkar (Pune) and the Gundecha Brothers (Bhopal), and has performed internationally since 2009.

Rooted in one of the oldest living traditions of Indian classical music, Aana’s work bridges ancient sound wisdom and contemporary sonic landscapes. Her voice moves between meditative depth, powerful overtones, subtle microtonality, and trance-inducing rhythmic structures.

Her artistic focus lies in the exploration of vibration (Naad), sacred texts, improvisation, and the meeting point between East and West.

Short Rendition of a Traditional Dhrupad Performance

Improvisation in Raag Ahir Bhairav
Video by Dave Masu (2019)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTRZumczCT8

This performance presents a short rendition of a traditional Indian classical Dhrupad recital in Raag Ahir Bhairav, a raga associated with the early morning and a serene, contemplative mood.

The video demonstrates the essential elements of Dhrupad performance practice:

  • Alap – a slow, rhythm-free melodic unfolding of the raga, exploring microtonal nuances and overtone resonance
  • Gradual development of tonal space and meditative depth
  • Introduction of pulse and structured improvisation within the traditional framework

Rooted in one of the oldest surviving forms of Hindustani classical music, Dhrupad emphasizes purity of tone, sustained resonance, and spiritual concentration. This rendition highlights the timeless, introspective power of the tradition while allowing space for spontaneous improvisation.

Education & Lineage

  • Intensive Dhrupad training (India, 2004–2010)
  • Traditional Guru–Shishya apprenticeship
  • Background in architecture and urban development (ETH Zurich, HSR Rapperswil, HSLU, ZHAW)
  • Ongoing studies in electronic production (Ableton, Cubase)
